Reduction of the CD16-CD56bright NK Cell Subset Precedes NK Cell Dysfunction in Prostate Cancer. PLOS ONE, 2013

We investigated NKA as a marker for IFN-gamma levels and the distribution of NK cell subsets in PCa patients. The results of our study indicate that impaired NKA is presumably preceded by a reduction in CD56bright cells, and that the level of NKA could be utilized as a supportive diagnostic marker for PSA.

  • Lösemi

Monitoring NK cell activity in patients with hematological malignancies. OncoImmunology, 2013

Natural killer (NK) cells are lymphocytes of the innate immune system that can recognize and kill various types of malignant cells. Monitoring the activity of peripheral NK cells in patients affected by hematological malignancies may provide prognostic information or unveil ongoing tumor-specific immune responses.

  • Akciğer kanseri

Increased killer immunoglobulin-like receptor expression and functional defects in natural killer cells in lung cancer. Immunology, 2011

Both NK cell cytotoxicity and granzyme B expression were reduced in lung cancer patients, and defective IFN-gamma production has been found in both T cells and NK cells in lung cancer patients.

  • Kolorektal Kanser

Reduction in cytokine production in colorectal cancer patients: association with stage and reversal by resection. British Journal of Cancer, 2000

Production of IFN-gamma prior to surgery were reduced to a greater extent in colorectal cancer patients.

Prognostic Significance of Natural Killer Cell Activity in Patients With Gastric Carcinoma: A Multivariate Analysis. The American Journal of Gastroenterology, 2001

The 5 year survival rates were higher in patients with higher NK cell activity.

  • Metastatik Kanser

Comparative analysis of innate immune system function in metastatic breast, colorectal, and prostate cancer patients with circulating tumor cells. Experimental and Molecular Pathology, 2014

Each of our three metastatic cancer patient groups, NK cell cytotoxic activity was decreased in patients with a relatively high number of CTCs in peripheral blood compared to patients with a relatively low number of CTCs.

  • Otoimmun hastalıklar

Impaired IFN- production and proliferation of NK cells in multiple sclerosis. Advance Access publication, 2011

NK cells from MS patients produced reduced amounts of IFN-gamma following IL-12 stimulation. These data suggest a selective impairment of NK cells and with IFN-gamma production as well as proliferation compromised hallmark effector functions of this NK cell subset in MS patients.

  • Kronik stres ve uyku eksikliği

Psychologic stress, reduced NK cell activity, and cytokine dysregulation in women experiencing diagnostic breast biopsy. Psychoneuroendocrinology. 2007

Chronic stressors (in this case the experience of breast biopsy) appear to decrease natural killer cell activity (NKCA), not as a result of changes in the number of circulating NK cells but rather as a result of changes in functional activity.

Partial night sleep deprivation reduces natural killer and cellular immune responses in humans. FASEB J. 1996

The physiological function of sleep in the maintenance of health remains unknown (21). However, these data further implicate sleep in the homeostatic regulation of natural and cellular aspects of the immune system. Even a modest loss of sleep early in the night can lead to a decrement of NK activity, LAK cell activity, and lymphocyte production of IL-2.

Peripheral natural killer cytotoxicity and CD56posCD16pos cells increase during early pregnancy in women with a history of recurrent spontaneous abortion. Hum Reprod. 2000

We have found evidences for the hypothesis that in women with a history of recurrent spontaneous abortion low pre-conceptional peripheral NK cell levels are indicative for a subsequent successful pregnancy. During pregnancy, RSA women have markedly increased NK cell cytotoxicity. Notably, within the RSA group, NK cell numbers of 12% were strongly associated with a subsequent pregnancy carried to term.

Characterization of type 1 and type 2 cytokine production profile in physiologic and pathologic human pregnancy. Clin Exp Immunol. 1996

A decrease in the production of IL-2 and IFN-gamma accompanied by an increase in production of IL-4 and IL-10, was observed in normal pregnancy, with the lowest quantities of IL-2 and IFN-gamma and the highest quantities of IL-4 and IL-10 present in the third trimester of pregnancy. Statistically significant increased production of both IL-2 and IFN-gamma and reduced production of IL-10 characterized pathologic pregnancies and distinguished them from normal pregnancies.

These preliminary data suggest that a type 2 cytokine profile may be associated with normal human pregnancy, whereas the lack of a dominant type 2 cytokine profile may be indicative of a pathologic pregnancy

Natural killer cells and regulatory T cells in early pregnancy loss. Int J Dev Biol. 2014

In normal pregnancy, these cells are not killers, but rather provide a microenvironment t

Natural killer cells in obesity - impaired function and increased susceptibility to the effects of cigarette smoke. PLoS One. 2010

Obese subjects have impaired NK cell activity that is more susceptible to the detrimental effects of cigarette smoke compared to lean subjects. Adiponectin is capable of restoring NK cell activity and may have therapeutic potential for immunity in obese subjects and smokers.

A high-throughput assay of NK cell activity in whole blood and its clinical application. Biochemical and Biophysical Biochem Biophys Res Commun. 2014

We developed a simple assay that uses whole blood instead of PBMC or isolated NK cells. This novel assay is suitable for high-throughput screening and the monitoring of diseases, because it employs serum of ex vivo stimulated whole blood to detect interferon (IFN)-gamma secreted from NK cells as an indicator of NKA.
After the stimulation of NK cells, the determination of IFN-gamma concentration in serum samples by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) provided a swift, uncomplicated, and high-throughput assay of NKA ex vivo. Therefore, the NKA could be utilized as a supportive diagnostic marker for microsatellite stable (MSS) colorectal cancer.

In Vivo Enhancement of Natural Killer Cell Activity through Tea Fortifi ed with Ayurvedic Herbs

The effect of a tea fortifi ed with fi ve herbs selected from Indian traditional medicine (Ayurveda) for their putative immunoenhancing effect (Withania somnifera, Glycyrrhzia glabra, Zingiber offi cinale, Ocimum sanctum and Elettaria cardamomum) on innate immunity was investigated.
